difficult
Distance 14.4 km
From the Pörterwald PostBus stop, take the alp road via Hinter Brosmatt to the Lengegg refuge (Point 1551), where it is worth pausing - although the latter is not manned in winter. From there and further up, you have wonderful views over the Sarneraa valley and its ring of mountains with the Pilatus, Rigi, Stanserhorn and Arvi on the horizon. The trail continues along the alp road to Fluonalp. From there the path climbs in slightly hilly terrain up to the Dundelegg (Point 1726) and then westwards via the Rückenegg, always keeping to the ridge as far as the Mändli summit (Point 2055), your destination. The Bernese Alps are in full view throughout the ridge section.
Return the same way.
Provided there is no risk of avalanches, you can descend directly to the Lengegg refuge from the Rückenegg (Point 1949) down the broad slopes slopes via Chringenboden and Chäseren, crossing to the left of the striking little valley below the Rossflue. From the refuge, the return leg follows the ascent route.
